Ego is the traitor in your midst

Ego is the biggest traitor to a man's character and value. The bigger it is, the more he is betrayed, and the more he is undermined, and the more he is going to be conquered by whatever it is that he's trying to conquer. The key to real strength is selflessness, to not think about yourself. And honor and pride are not the same thing as ego. Think about the Sahaba What did they used to say about them?

That they loved death more than they loved life. That's selflessness, and that gave them strength that makes you incomparable. When you have a big ego, you are the easiest person to manipulate. That's one of the biggest ways the shaitan can play with you. Whenever you react to something or before you react to something, check.

Am I doing that on the basis of my ego or on the basis of it's the right thing to do? Allah.
