What's the motive for the false 'overpopulation' narrative?

You know, someone asked a good question in our discussion group about why is it that elites like, say, Bill Gates push this false narrative about overpopulation on the earth when the truth of the matter is that we're entering a period when there's going to be massive population decline, particularly throughout the West. So what's the point in pushing this idea that there's too many people in the world? I think there's probably a lot of reasons for this deception, and one of the main reasons might be it provides a very tidy explanation for poverty, famine, depletion of resources, and so on, while shifting blame or responsibility away from greed, mismanagement, and corruption. If you can convince people that there's not enough to go around, then they won't check for who's taking everything.
